Email Newsletter Archive - May 2008

Hello and Happy Spring!
As I mentioned back in March, I will be sending my newsletters on a bi-monthly basis instead of monthly.
I am gearing up for several community events this year, so visit my website and click on "Events" to see where I will be.
Spring is always a great time of year to re-evaluate what you have and what you need to get. Don't forget to put that "Honey-Do" list together and start making changes.

Matelasse Fabric

I thought I would give you an education on Matelasse fabric. It is from the Silk family, upholstery may be wool, cotton or manufactured fiber.

It is puffed, quilted, or blistered, with pockets of fabric raised above the ground; weave achieved in finishing by a combination of high-twist yarn and compound weave. Woven so two layers of fabric are created and joined in many places. Weave may be dobby but is usually jacquard (larger or more intricate pattern). The fabric is called matelasse when the puffed surface has definite raised pockets in the weave.

It is an expensive, showy fabric and medium to heavy matelasse is used for upholstery, drapes and bedspreads.

This fabric is very elegant.

Furniture Insurance/Warranty

Many people question whether or not they should purchase the additional insurance/warranty on furniture.
As a professional decorator, I recommend it highly. I do not get any fee for promoting this. I feel strongly about having the extra protection, especially with very expensive upholestry.
Most programs will replace a piece of furniture if they cannot remove the stain, fix a puncture or rip in fabric or leather and cannot repair deep gashes on wood or water stain marks on wood.
The plan will have a list of stains that it will cover. If any of the above were to happen to your furniture, you would call them to come out and try to repair it, if they can't then they will replace the whole piece.

It is normally good for a period of 5 yrs depending on the furniture company or program.

So the next time you purchase furniture, ask about the additional coverage, have them explain the plan to you and the cost. It normally runs between $150 to $300 extra. It is well worth the money.
Fabrics for Sale

Clients have asked me if I would just sell the fabric to them so they can make drapery, pillows, cushions, etc, themselves.
I have no problem doing so, and I can provide you a discount for the fabric versus you purchasing it at retail costs. Most fabrics can arrive within a week once payment is made. Fabrics will be delivered directly to the customer.
I carry many manufacturers brands and have access to many more through my vendors. Most manufacturers you would not be able to purchase from directly since you are not in the trade, so I provide you a larger inventory to choose from. If there is something in particular you are looking for I will arrange to locate it.
Some manufacturers I carry are Stout Brothers, Stroheim and Romann, Maxwell, B. Berger, JAB, Motif Designs, Robert Allen, Fabricut, Kravet, Taffard, and many more.
So if you are challenged with finding the right fabric for a project you are working on, please don't hestitate to contact me.
