Now that the tax season is finished, I'm sure you are ready to enjoy the Spring. This time of year has always been my favorite time of year. The flowers are blooming and the streets have come to life again with children playing. It is a happy time of year so enjoy.

Bowl for Kids Sake Event - A Huge Success!
I would like to thank all of you who sponsored me. Over 200 friends and supporters of Big Brothers Big Sisters joined us for our annual Bowl for Kids' Sake on Saturday, April 8th. I would especially like to thank my boyfriend George for raising the most money for the event. He was able to raise about $2,250 through his efforts and was awarded a certificate for raising the most monies as an individual. Special thanks to McCollister's Transportation for their generous donation of $2,000. The event raised about $28,000 total for the kids. My little sister Melissa says thank you. It was a fun-filled day with great things going on like: Bowling and pizza, The Phillie Phanatic, SoccaRoo, the Soulman, and Spot from the Courier Post, The Silent and Live Auctions, SoJo 104.9 playing music, and .... people just getting together to have fun and help kids! Bowl for Kids' Sake is one of our biggest fundraisers and allows us to match kids in Burlington County to caring adult mentors. Visit their web site for more information about their programs.

Rugs vs. Carpets
I would like to take a moment and differentiate between carpets and rugs. I often hear those words used interchangeably, however there is a difference. Carpets are called broadloom and are sold by the yard from a roll and taped or seamed together where necessary and then attached to the floor. Hence, wall to wall carpet. Rugs are either in standard sizes or custom, they have edges finished with a binding thread, fringes or other materials and do not attach to the floor. You can base the room decor on the type of soft floor covering you choose, because the floor covering brings furnishings into harmony, creates personality and a feeling of luxury. They can even alter the apparent size and proportion of a room. When you place the same carpet throughout it serves as a transition from one room to another, which provides a feeling of unity. A rug, on the other hand, may be a room's focal point, just like a piece of art. It all comes down to the style you want to create, from there you can determine which form of floor covering to select.

The Heimlich Maneuver
All family members should be versed in this method. Take a few minutes and share this with your family, you never know when you might need it. If a person appears to be choking and you decide to use this maneuver, follow these procedures:
Stand behind the victim and wrap your arms around his/her waist.
Make a fist with one hand and place the thumb side of your fist against the victim's abdomen, below the rib cage and above the navel.
Grasp your fist with other hand and press into the abdomen with a quick upward motion.
Repeat thrusts as often as needed until object is expelled.
Remember you have only about 4 minutes to clear the air passage before the victim may suffer permanent brain damage. Practice is the best way to be prepared. See your local Red Cross or community college for a first aid course near you.
