Absolute Living Today Newsletter
September 2009

Dear Teresa,

Hello Everyone,
Sorry for the delay in sending out my monthly newsletter. August was a very busy month, professionally and personally, so I decided to skip a month to focus on what needed to be focused on.
If you recall I was scheduled to be married last month and I am happy to say everything went wonderfully and I am now Mrs. Davenport. Our puppy Reese made a great ring-bearer, he was so good and quiet throughout the ceremony. Mama and Papa were proud. Our honeymoon on a cruise to Alaska was wonderful and exhausting and our move to the new home is completed, although there are many more boxes to be emptied. So you can see last month was a crazy month.
I hope all of you enjoyed your Summer months. I am thankful to those clients who have been patient with me last month and still trusted me with their projects considering all that was going on.

Now it's all business moving forward, so I hope all of you are gearing up to complete some Fall projects. Now is the time to get started to allow for furniture and window treatment deliveries before the holidays.

Sincerely,

Teresa Tocco-Davenport

Common Defects in Wood
Hardwood floors has become very popular again. If you recall, many older homes were built with them, only to be covered up with carpet. However, now everyone is tearing up the carpet to reveal the wood and refinish it or replace it if needed. The dilemmna most people have is understanding the common defects in wood that are actually very artistic in nature. Some defective wood has become in short supply and high demand and is now only available as veneer. I am listing and reviewing five common defects for you to understand.
1. BURLS - they are wounds to the tree's skin made from hard, swirling scar tissue, popular on veneers. Due to the interlocking grains, burls are very difficult to be used for furniture because they are not always strong due to the gaps between the swirls. That's why they are made into veneers.
2. KNOTS - depending on the frequency of knots, they can weaken a board and make it difficult to use. They also tend to ooze sap or resin and it is recommended they be sealed using a chemical made from shellac.
3. DISEASE AND AGING - this creates remarkable colors and patterns. Spalted beech features black lines, while old oak turns a deep brown color.
4. RIPPLE, QUILTING AND FIGURE - extraordinary wavy patterns can be found in some woods, especially maple and sycamore.
5. CROTCH AND ROOT - interlocking grain of walnut roots creates a beautiful effect and has the strength to take recoil. Crotch wood, is produced where a large branch meets the trunk and it offers rich flaming grain.
There are many hidden secrets in hardwood due to the varying degrees of grain, keep in mind the different grains are what distinguish the characteristics of one wood versus another.
So when shopping for any hardwood for projects you are working on, keep in mind that many woodworkers believe defects bring character to a project and reflect a more organic approach to forestry.
